to negotiate. wrote a letter to the ayatollah six months ago wanting to talk to him. >> what would mitt romney do differently? mitt romney talking to george stephanopoulos said he had the same red line as president obama. >> we don't know what president obama's red line is since he won't share it with us. won't share it with prime minister netanyahu. he doesn't want to have a red line. he wants to keep it as fuzzy as possible. if he wants to do that and communicate that privately to netanyahu and the ayatollah, i'm okay with that. the reality is he wants to keep it fuzzy. my fear is iran will pass the point of no return without knowing it passes the point of no return. >> first of all, we don't necessarily know what the president has said privately to an israeli leader but he has said publicly acquiring a weapon is the red line. he just said it yesterday. >> we know he hasn't told netanyahu that. netanyahu is begging him to meet with him to set a red line and is he leaving netanyahu in the dark, which is a terrible mistake. >> yesterday at the u.n. he said we do we must to prevent iran from ob

in job creation. my competition is governor perry. if he talks jobs, governor romney, he will do well. that is the biggest issue in our country. clearly, it is an issue in florida. we have done well but we still have people unemployed. a lot better than what we were but we still have a lot of work. >>neil: you reminded me at the convention and other times we have chatted, polls are fleeting and fickle. but it is interesting to me that in some of the states, swing states, the president made inroads and it could change over night. if -- in ohio, in michigan, in wisconsin, all the republican governors, all practicing turn arounds, all utilizing policies that would appear to be anathema to president obama but now the benefit seems to go to...president obama. >>guest: it is incumbent upon governor romney to talk more about what he will do on jobs. whatever the issue is, if you talk to -- i go out all the time and listen to the people around the state. two things in our state: they want their child to get a great education because you carry about the american dream. two, you want to get a j

the rich wouldn't have to stay taxes. remember romney talking about that 47% that doesn't pay federal in come tax, can you believe what funds they are? how about you you didn't pay a dime on that $100 million. you're the bum. you're the cheat. when he was asked hey have you done anything where you can show empathy toward other human beings? that seems an easy question, right no here's what mitt romney says. >> don't forget, i got everybody in my state insured. 100% of the kids in our state have health insurance. i don't think there is anything that shows more empathy and care about people in the country than that kind of record. >> the one thing that shows your empathy is providing care like for example the same program as obamacare, what you did in massachusetts. >> the first big one i'm not going for is obamacare. i will repeal obamacare. >> there goes that empathy. what are you left with? not much at all. let's bling in a correspondent that has -- i do this every time epic, go ahead. >> all right epic politics man is up in san francisco. epic headquarters at current. michael, we ha

weeks for 15 minute infomecials and talk about the choices between obama or romney and speak in serious venues. get away from the rallies and talk to, you know, the cincinnati chamber of commerce. he should be -- lou: excuse me? wait a minute, brad, with all do respect, that would be an electric moment in electoral history if he were to move to the chamber of commerce. i respect the judgment mightily, but that one -- >> he needs to speak to serious people at serious venues to talk policy. you don't get that across at a rally or across to the people in a 30 second sound bite. lou: the polls, do they agree on the strengths and weaknesses? do they reveal that? you talk about the seriousness of a moment in which it's captured for free media, but the reality is that there are strengths and weaknesses, it seems, at work here, otherwise, there would be, i suppose, an outright tie between the two. chris, are there stengths that are being revealed here? weaknesses revealed on all of the polls? >> yeah, here's something to keep very much in mind. here's how the electorat looks different in 2008 a

profit. >> when mitt romney was talking about harvesting and maximizing profits what he was really talking about is a technique of squeezing payrolls. >> bill: it is now out in the open capitalism versus socialism. the socialists are on president obama's side. lou dobbs and i will analyze. >> she should have resigned over that murder of the ambassador in libya because it was her fault that he didn't have adequate security. >> ben stein calling for secretary of state clinton to be fired over the libyan assassination. mr. stein will be here. >> he is against safety nets. if you fall, tough luck. that strongly suggests that you wake the [bleep] up. >> bill: also tonight gutfeld and mcguirk will analyze samuel l. jacuzzi's -- jackson's latest poem. >> we're all on his own if romney has his way. >> bill: you are about to enter the no spin zone. the factor begins right now. >> bill: hi, i'm bill o'reilly. thanks for watching us tonight. capitalism vs. socialism. romney vs. obama that is the subject of this evening's talking points memo. mother jones possibly one of fidel castro's favorit

mitt romney also offered some remarks. and in a breathless day of nonstop talk andelr. romney has just arrived for a rousing event in ohio where he's desperately hoping to claw his way out of a substantial polng deficit. there are sign mrs. romney may be coming to hisenses after joking at the clinton global initiative that he could do with ithero a former president. >> if there's one thing we've learned in this election season, by the way, it is that a few words from bill clinton can do a man a lot of good. all i got to d now is wait a couple days for that bounce to ppen. >> right, we'll keep our eye on at. e rumt ry l tk about these days is his attack on the president for saying the middle east would face bumps in the road and romney's suggestion that the president was somehow referring to the deaths of the american ambassador to libya and three other diploms. a theme that romney rra today though in a more muted form. >> syria has witnessed the killing of tens of thousands of people. the president of egypt is a member of the muslim brotherhood. our ambassador to libya was assassinated

often hear president obama talking about lincoln, mitt romney talking about ronald reagan, and now "newsweek" is out with a list of the ten best presidents since 1900. sir harold evans w is author offaus "the american century" has a tribute. it's a ploesh to have you here. >> thank you, madam. >> you gaekted together ten distinguished historians. what was the criteria? >> the cteriasha k o active presidents were they. it's very interesting. the historians, all -- every single one of them chose franklin roosevelt as number one. >> why? >> best predent since theodore roosevelt in the beginning of the century. if you ask tm why he did th asivnd effective, those two things. and he had a sense of america's ideal of itself. so they took those creria. they didn't know what the others were doing. they all voted a it's interesting the top three -- around the table and discussing this. >> no, no. it was all in isolation. they locked them in a room with an ice pack and 5,000 volumes of their own works andsaid, come up with -- >> that doesn't soundike fu >> all othem, they pretty much agreed o

. the aides i've talked to around romney say they have a great relationship, they talk several times a day. but in reality ryan does have a different set of advisers around him, a different set of speechwriters. i think everyone at this point is waiting to see if ryan, in fablt, goes rogue at some point. does he move to save his brand, which, of course, was this young gun, tea party guy. does he look at his future prospects and see romney as being something of a drag on whatever his future prospects might be for national office four years from now. >> well, ryan gives us two dilemmas. one, is this romney being insquare and overreacting or is it a problem for mr. ryan who has to protekt his brand for the future and if he decides his future is at risk, what happenses if he does go roguwro? >> well, in some sense ryan can help himself and romney at the same time. in other words, by deflecting the spotlight by him and saying, no, you're right, romney is the guy at the top of the ticket, romney is the guy you should be paying attention to, that also absolves him of some of the responsibility fo

, but something always sticks. today we got this bit of mitt romney talking about the emergency landing last week of a plane that at the time was carrying his wife, ann romney. >> i appreciate the fact that she is on the ground, safe and sound. i don't think she knows how worried some of us were. when you have a fire in an aircraft, there's no place to go exactly. and you can't find any oxygen from outside the care craft because the windows don't open. it's a real problem. >> it's a real problem that the windows don't roll down on airplanes? is it also a problem that guns don't shoot backwards through the barrel this way? why don't the windows roll down? i don't think he was joking because he couldn't possibly be joking about his wife being in a plane crash. so did he -- has he never seen gold finger? >> right? maybe mr. romney was joking when he said it was a real problem he couldn't get the windows to roll down in airplanes when he was joking about scary involving his wife. you wouldn't think a guy would joke about. maybe he meant only planes flying at low altitudes? we don't know. regardless o

't like mitt romney. this is what every republican i talk to sayg, satch r sg hocan he continue to waste another day? i'm looking at my calendar every day, when is he going to win a single news cycle? >> i would argue more positive for obama and say he's doubled the stock market, he's taken t unemployment rate from double digits down to eight. if hdoeshat ain,ll ke idown to six. if you want to say i'll take it down two or three points further, just stay on that continuum. let's take a look at this. a new obamcampaign ad just put out a powerful ad airing in swing states that uses romney's own words against him. let's listen to this. >> there are 47% othe people who wi ve for e prident noteat who are dependent upon government, who believe that they're victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they're entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it and they will vote for this president no matter what. and so my job is not to worry about those people. i wi never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for

jersey governor talks. chris christie thinks romney will turn the election upside down, his words, and that it will be a brand new race after the showdown in denver. no surprise romney's people ran right away from chris christie's comments pretty quickly. they're trying to lower expectations, which is how candidates normally approach these things. but let's suppose for a minute that chris christie's right. what would it take for mitt romney to win the debate and change the storyline of this election? 50 million people are expected to tune in. many think tomorrow night is romney's last best chance to turn things around. he's been practicing for the debate for months on top of the practice he got in the almost two dozen primary debates. but here's the challenge, romney has to come off as likable, authentic and show that he can coect with the voters. we've been hearing that for months, haven't we? apparently it's still a challenge for him. a piece in the daily beast suggests the only thing romney can do to change the race in a meaningful way is to get specific about his ideas. so far

like ohio isn't, just, coincidence? >>guest: it is as much coincidence as governor romney talked about ohio. this is interesting --. >>neil: you had this interest in three or four years as president to go after chinese where the concentration in the last few months of trade sanctions? >>guest: why being so cynical, neil? when you look back what the president has done on trade, he has taken a more balanced approach. he has been for trade. he understands, also, the consequences and the implication of a trade conflict with china. look at the other side, manufacturing jobs in terms of democrat the of the recession have grown. when you look at governor romney's record on china, it is tough to take his words with any credibility. >>neil: all their stuff is made in chinese. >>guest: everything is made in china. >>neil: you are talking about companies that ship jobs overseas and you leave a big one out, that is glaring, right? >>guest: i am not sure i see it that way. the president, i think, takes a balanced approach when it comes to china. the challenge here is for governor romney to paint th

topic? >> i think there's a certain amount of interest group prejudice on this. when mitt romney talks about dodd frank, this is micro targeting. dodd frank is obnoxious to probably people than lyme disease is. but they are very wealthy viewers, so their views count for a lot. i take ben's point about don't be distracted. the prop is that the romney campaign's big message have been counterproductive. they should be talking about jobs and employment. they spend a lot f time talking about the ryan plan, medicare and medicaid. talking about lyme disease is a big improvement over a day spent talking about taking medicare away from people. >> that is the faintest craze of a political campaign you're going to hear. it's not -- at a moment when mitt romney is losing, it does not strike me that that's going to turn it around. >> we're going to be finding out what they are focused on. up next, a shocking admission from apple. truly shocking from this company and today, new details released in the massacre at the colorado movie theatre in aurora. why the man accused of the murders was banned fro

in advantages of this. paul ryan was talking about the romney ryan ticket new framework for the race. they said referendum on president obama's record. but it's decide how to best deal with the competent. here is paul ryan trying to set the stage. >> we can have a dynamic growing economy that produces opportunity or stagnant economy that fosters dependency. we can stick with the failed policies of last four years for the next four years or a brighter future. stalg nation versus growth, dependency versus opportunity and mobility. that is the classic choice and clear difference we are offering. >> reporter: that is sort of classic choice, a very broad assessment of the two competing viewpoints and agendas. there is a big discussion always about whether or not you win debates by fact points and trying gotchas or whether it's a question of demeanor and personality. you can go back to famous debates, al gore and george bush where al gore sed more intelligent things on the stage but his demeanor was so lousy he got bad reviews. so, with a full month of october dedicated to these four weeks, these deb

of other places. it would be nice to hear mitt romney talk about how he helps the wealthy and middle class. what's his plan to get people out of poverty. >> this is the story behind the numbers. you can have unemployment and still have poverty because of the nature of wage stagnation. you were saying in the break that you thought the october surprise happened in september. >> we decided. >> because of early voting, as you talked about, the october surprise actually has already happened. it happened in september and it was that 47% video where you had mitt romney unplugged, unfiltered in a nice cocoon with his upper 1% friends or disparaging, belittling the 47% and not just saying they're not going to vote for me. but saying i can't do anything for them. they don't want to take responsibility for their lives. that's unbelievably damaging. for there to be a summit on poverty, cgi to have mitt romney talk about that. people would sit back -- >> that feels like that would be rich in the debate. >> that is the other key part of it. same comparison to the 2008 gaffe of clinging to their gungs an

: romney released a new 60 second ad. he talks about the struggles of average americans. president obama has out spent mitt romney on tv ads and the attacks have resonated with voters like this republican. >> he really doesn't know the common man. >> reporter: the latest poll shows president obama with a ten-point lead over romney in ohio. cbs news has decided to move ohio from undecided to leans obama, a win for the president there would move him 18 electoral votes closer to win. that's 270. >> susan mcginnis in washington. in the nation's capital, vice president joe biden hosted a reception for hispanic leaders last night. he predicted most would see a hispanic president in their lifetime and took a swipe at mitt romney. >> when i hear some of our friends talk about, you know, a nation that is a culture of dependency, all i have to do is hang out with you guys. i mean it. all they got to do is look around this country and see the vibrancy of what is on the horizon. >> biden added the obama administration was determined to fix the nation's immigration policies. the prime minister of isr

heard mr. romney talk about the fact that we will not. >> right. >> here is the reality that has to be faced. if you are running for office, it is one of those things i guess you cannot say. it still needs to be said. the defense budget is large and it needs to come down. if you are not running for office, you can say all this stuff. a republican will be happy to tell you that it can and must be down. he points out that the u.s. defense budget is larger than the combined defense budget of the next 14 largest countries and the world. what struck me this year was the house in may passed an appropriation bill for defense. were they looking to cut? no. it gave $3 billion to the pentagon more than what it asked for. the pentagon specifically wanted to cut back or reduce a drone program, a tank program, and a submarine program. the defense department said we do not want these things. we do not need them. the house put them back. this is about, frankly, sending back to the district rather than addressing the country's fiscal needs. yes, the defense budget can be cut. frankly, the defens

television host that debated romney. we will talk more right after the break. joyce myer will talk about the power of words. stay with us, we'll be right back. [ applause ] >>> we're back with brett o'donald and we're talking about the first big debate that comes up on wednesday. in my experience, debating romney four years ago. it appeared to me there were times on the debate stage, i notice there was almost telegraphing some of his forbes and feelings, his facial expressions. that is an important thing that people watch for to see if you are pushing his buttons and getting through to him. i don't know if i noticed it this year's primaries. how important is it that mitt romney gets under the skin of barack obama barack obama get under the skin of mitt romney and it will show to the audience? >> audiences reported they take as much as 65% of the meaning from how something is said over what is said. so body language and how he appears on the stage is very important. normally when a candidate gets defensive that is when they started looking bad. that happens with barack obama. it happened

but the support of a key voting group is in jeopardy. >> what? we're talking about why mitt romney is behind? you have one of the biggest stories going on in country's last four years of history. you are ignoring about what does mitt romney have to do in 39 days. joining me now is columnist and former presidential candidate pat buchanan. pat, i wanted to take you back because you were in the nixon administration, you saw what happened when watergated was going on. there was coverups and misstatements that cost him his presidency. bill clinton got impeached because he lied about some things to a grand jury and then covered them up. what i'm asking, isn't there something different going on here? if so, why? >> well, i think there is no doubt why. let me talk about the situation -- i'm getting feedback in the earpiece. let me talk about the situation with richard nixon in 1969. when the break-in occurred in 1972 he was accused of not telling the truth about what he learned when his campaign broke in and put a bug on the phone of the democratic national chairman. that is the issue which he was impeac

. >> ooh, tough talk, right? none of these things stopped romney from allowing chinese investments into his portfolio. his returns show the romney family owning shares of a chinese oil company. romney dumped the shares this summer. he knew it was going to be an issue. romney also invested in a chinese online media company called yuku. buzz feed reports the site was launched in 2006 and quickly became a haven for downloading illegal american content. hold on a second here now. are we grabbing this? what did romney tell us china was doing with american intellectual properties? >> china is stealing our intellectual property, our patents, our designs, our know-how, our brand names. >> but you invested in it. i guess all those things add up to a good investment for mitt romney. let's stop right here for just a moment, if we may. all of these details were uncovered in mitt romney's tax returns. this is all stuff we didn't know before last friday. many of them are problematic, to say the least. these are the tax returns romney was okay with showing the american people. we'll let them see this. ima

than go back into the work force and you heard mitt romney talk about that in the interview today, that he wants to get more people back to work instead of being dependent on government, and so that is why you did not see him back away from that claim today. >> lori, do you recall the romney campaign removing or correcting any ads or frankly, the obama campaign, for that matter? >> i don't. i don't recall either campaign removing or correcting ads, and you know, i don't think this campaign is any different than other campaigns. there is very rare instance of a campaign or even a third party group taking an ad down or issuing a corrected version of it. >> yeah. i did an interview with debbie wassermann-schultz and they had put out an ad, i think it was the dnc or super pac, i can't remember, maybe the dnc but it was an obama campaign ad. she had misquoted the "l.a. times" and made it sound like they were confirming something which was not what the article said. they didn't retract that ad, to my knowledge. we'll continue to look for that. lori, appreciate it. jim, thanks. let us kn

in the white house. >> we just got word actually that they're on the phone as we speak. mitt romney talking to benjamin netanyahu. telanovella. wow, maria, you want to respond to that? >> well, here's what i'll say. look, there has been a lot of hooplah around, you know, what has been done, what meetings the president is having, what meetings he isn't having, but i got to tell you, suzanne, from the standpoint of having been in some of these bilateral meetings, the pomp and circumstance that surrounds those kinds of meetings especially at places like the u.n., nothing of substance gets done. i actually prefer that our president is on the phone with prime minister netanyahu today. he was on the phone for an hour last week. he has been on the phone with other leaders from the middle east constantly throughout all of the chaos that is happening. that is much more important from a substantive standpoint than from any sort of perception standpoint of who he met or who he didn't meet, and we also saw the prime minister walk back his criticism. >> we got to leave it there. anna, maria, good to see

that -- he did sort of strike some military themes here at valley forge, talking about mitt romney, of course. he is trying to make the case that the best defense is a better economy tying national security to the economy, but one very interesting thing that happened here, suzanne, mitt romney at the very end of this speech here said he is going to win pennsylvania. he said that earlier. he said it again he is going to pennsylvani the polls -- or latest cnn poll of polls shows mitt romney down by ten points here. it would be a very tough uphill climb for h to win tstate. >> right. >> i think it's in the romney campaign's interest to expand the map, and i think that's what they're trying to do. >> john mccain didn't win pennsylvania the last go round either. ditheyhange in any significant way when they look at the demographics and they get some sort of optimism or confidence from that? >> well, you know, pat toomey, the pennsylvania senate repuan annnced m romney. he was able to wi t state, and even though he had some credentials, he was ahead of the ub forroh at one time, and so this is a sta

's talk about governor romney for a moment, you know, we're happy to have a debate about our approach to terrorism and foreign policy. the president promised that he'll end the iraq war, he did. he would focus on osama bin laden and bring him to justice, we did. romney called ending the iraq war tragic. it was unthinkable that we didn't leave 20,000 troops behind. he said famously in 2008, he wouldn't have gone into pakistan to get bin laden. these are important issues. not just from a foreign policy standpoint, one of the reasons that we have huge deficits we have these unpaid wars. the voters also view these foreign issues through a prism. >> david plouffe, thank you very much >>> we'll be right back with our powerhouse roundtable in just 60 seconds. it's something you're born with. and inspires the things you choose to do. you do what you do... because it matters. at hp we don't just believe in the power of technology. we believe in the power of people when technology works for you. to dream. to create. to work. if you're going to do something. make it matter. >>> quick change ther

. romney is romney. mitt is mitt, and, you know, we knew there was -- that the field was weak. we talked about it all spring during the republican primaries, and the weak field, surprise, surprise, produced a pretty weak candidate. >> jonathan, when mitt romney went to london, one tabloid newspaper described hip as mitt the twit, but we're also hearing that romney may be the victim because the republican party has hewn so far to the right that it's simply impossible for him to win the base of his party and win independence within the electorate. is that fair? >> you know, i don't really think it is. i mean, i agree that the republican party has moved far from the right and it would have taxed any politician to get back to the center, but he was his own worst enemy during the primaries. he didn't have to go to the right of newt gingrich and rick perry on immigration to win that nomination. if he had come out and, you know, said that he was for the dream act sort of the way gingrich did, he still would have gone on to win the nomination and now he would be in a position -- >> you think so?

was totally unacceptable. >> of all the romney talking points this is the one they've been flogging the hardest of late. and the campaign saw a golden opportunity to drive the point home this week with the united nations general assembly meeting here in new york. with speeches by both the president and mr. netanyahu, this would be the perfect forum to showcase the enormous rift that republicans keep rooting for. but something funny happened on the way to turtle bay. take a listen. >> two days ago from this podium president obama reiterated that the threat of a nuclear armed iran cannot be contained. i very much appreciate the president's position, as does everyone in my country. >> that must have been a big hit with mr. romney's boston brain trust. all year long they have been mapping out the narrative on foreign policy, endless ll lly portraying the president as anti-israel. all they needed was a little third party cover and look what happened. unfortunately for poor mr. romney, it's only going to get worse as more people pick up on his oft repeated line and finally start calling i

. socialism. romney vs. obama that is the subject of this evening's talking points memo. mother jones possibly one of fidel castro's favorite publications put out another old video of mitt romney. >> bain capital is an investment partnership, which was formed to invest in start up companies and ongoing companies, then to take an active hand in managing them and hopefully a to 8 years later to harvest them at a significant profit. we had the consulting resources and management skills and management resources to become actively involved in the companies we invested in to help them realize their potential values. >> bill: even though mother jones is appalled, that's what capitalism is. you grow companies, you make them more profitable. then if you are lucky, you sell them forlights of money. that's the free marketplace. that's capitalism. yeah sometimes the free market system is brutal but it does provide vast opportunity for those willing to work hard and take chances. capitalism has made the u.s.a. the most powerful nation on earth. it's the primary reason that millions of people all over the w

you use a zinger and it doesn't even work but, to be honest, mitt romney's been talking and dealing with zingers for a long time. let me show you something about mitt romney and zingers going back a little bit. >> coming up with the best answers for the best zingers. and number two is being able to communicate to the people of america that you're a leader. i think i have the best ideas for our nation. i think i have some pretty good zingers. >> so he's been talking about zingers since at least late last year, michelle. i mean, what is it with him and zingers? when are we going to hear specifics on his economic policies, on his health policies? every time specifics come up, they want to talk about something else and he's running around obsessed with zingers? >> yeah. i don't -- from what i'm -- zingers were a little debbie snack cake for years. i don't know what he's talking about most of the time because he doesn't need a zinger. he needs a message and this is what he's going to have to figure out in his debate what his core message that he always brings every question back home to

"the washington post" asked folks who will win the debate. 55% said president obama, 31% said mitt romney. what do you think they're basing that on? >> i think they're basing it on past performance and the observation that they think that president obama is a pretty cool customer in the sort of scenarios. i believe that chris christie has the right answer and the reason i think chris christie has the right answer is that 35 votes, 35 states pardon me, will already be voting by the time that debate begin

: i have not had a chance to talk to you person to person since mr. romney has made his famous comment. let me start with a comment itself and what your read on it is. >> there were a number of stab things for him politically. it was a tape of him speaking to republican donors. he seemed to say an honest attempt to say there are a lot of people who are not going to vote for me. there are a lot of people that are going to vote for me, and we need to go to the middle. what does that do for him? it reinforces the character of the obama team has work very hard to sell to voters in swing states, which is this is a very wealthy person who looks out for and things first and foremost about himself and his wealthy friends, so that is why it is so hurtful to his campaign because it played into the narrative president obama was trying to drive into the campaign. tavis: we have seen a lot of politicians who have gone to 60 minutes to try to set the record straight. mr. romney has done that. now did you get a chance to see it, and what did you make about his appearance? >> he is trying to restart a

the upcoming debate. what does mitt romney want to talk about when it's all over. we heard chris christie say come sunday morning, chris game time and what is it we'll be talking about. there's a great game in the country -- people have been looking for a change, they just haven't found it yet in mitt romney. he has not made the sale. we have seen a lot of presidential races where the challenger gets on the stage and the overall metrics in this case is unemployment, it's the deficits, it's the volatility of the markets, it's gas prices, where they're looking and giving romney a good, you know, once -- lookover i call it. if he can't make the sale in these debates, he's doomed. he has the opportunity to show not -- the metrics favor a challenger in a case like this, but the challenger's got to make the case. >> how about the president, does he have to have a do no harm strategy, does he have to have a solid performance and that's about it to close the deal? >> he has to do more than rope a dope to close the deal. and very well. as sotom alluded to as well. if these debates are really on issues

've talked to some analysts who have been somewhat critical of the romney camp for some of the ads they put together. for instance, the first ad they put up was an ad called day one which was just a direct translation of an english language ad they had. as part of that ad among the things that governor romney talks about is or the narrator does on his behalf talks about wanting to repeal the health care reform plan. obama-care. that, of course, is something that is is actually very popular with hispanic. that's what some people have been considerd to be a misstep. the kinds of things where they don't target an ad directly at the hispanic community. until they do that, they won't get it right >> woodruff: is there a sense of how effective that is, i this advertising the romney camp is doing, how effective it is? >> for one thing they're far behind in terms of spanish language ads, far behind the obama campaign. they've only spent about half as much as the obama campaign had. that number has rampd up dramatically. they say they're going to do a full ad blitz in the last month. they introduced

's going on. the romney campaign eager to talk about it in the days to come. >> in fact, this is a phrase that's gotten the president into trouble, has drawn a response from the romney campaign once before in a very different context. he was talking about bumps in the road in the economic recovery, and the romney campaign put together a very memorable ad where they had people standing up from along a road in the middle of nowhere, saying i'm not a bump in the road. >> i mean, this was a good day for mitt romney's campaign. we haven't said that in a long time. if he wins this thing, this could be the beginning of his comeback. he needed to get the focus off the 47% remark. at least for one day i think he did. >> greta: you know, it minimizes things, but it's not sort of like isolated like a gaffe, because you have a situation where he won't meet with the prime minister of israel, won't meet with netanyahu. secretary of state hillary clinton met with the presidents of afghanistan and libya. i realize she has a big portfolio. he doesn't seem fully engaged. >> i think that -- i think that it

it, what he had accomplished in massachusetts, how can mitt romney talk for five minutes on health care, even like 90 seconds without saying something that contradicts something he said the week before, the month before, that gets the base upset, that is confusing, that reporters can't quite understand? i don't know how he does it. he's tied himself into knots on this particular question. on the other side, i do know some obama aides who are a little worried that the president, who sometimes can be overly professorial, may use the time not to his advantage either. they'd like to see more succinct answers. they each have the opposite issue to deal with. how romney can speak coherently about health care in a way that's convincing and obama doesn't go too far down the debate. >> i think he's going to get through this on sheer unadulterated memory. what we saw on "60 minutes" seemed like opening arguments. scott pelley interviewed mitt romney, and steve krupp interviewed president obama. take a look at their competing visions for the government, what we should be doing in the federal g
